Plant of the Month May 2014

Dwarf Fountain Grass

Pennisetum alopecuroides ʻHamelnʼ

This ornamental grass has gorgeous, buff colored
plumes
that create movement in the garden. Ruffled by the slightest breeze, the seed heads sit upon finely textured foliage that adds to its beauty. It is stunning in mass plantings and whether in small groups or individually planted this grass softens any setting. In fall the grass turns a beautiful golden color that glows through the lower rays of the fall sun. In winter, it lends structure to the garden, while providing food for birds.

This variety has a compact growth habit, 24”-30” high x 12”-24” wide, but that does not minimize its presence. Dwarf Fountain Grass is a clumping grass that prefers full sun and regular watering. Each spring it should be cut a few inches above the ground and have the old, center growth cleared out. This grass can also be easily divided for additional plants.
